Kitchen Cabinet Materials Explained

Understanding kitchen cabinet materials helps you make informed choices about quality, durability, and value. Here’s your guide to what’s inside your cabinets.

Cabinet Carcasses

Chipboard (Particleboard)

The most common carcass material. Made from wood particles bonded with resin. Quality varies significantly – look for moisture-resistant grades for areas near sinks. Cost-effective and perfectly adequate when well-made.

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)

Denser and more stable than chipboard. Offers smooth surfaces and machines well. More moisture-resistant than standard chipboard but heavier.

Plywood

Layers of real wood veneer create a strong, stable material. More expensive but offers superior durability and moisture resistance. Often found in premium kitchens.

Cabinet Door Materials

Vinyl-Wrapped MDF

MDF covered in a PVC film. Affordable and available in many colours and finishes. Can peel over time, especially near heat sources. Entry-level option.

Foil-Wrapped MDF

Similar to vinyl but using a thinner foil. Budget option that provides acceptable results for the price.

Painted MDF

MDF primed and painted for a high-quality finish. More durable than wrapped options. Available in virtually any colour. Can be repainted if damaged.

Lacquered MDF

Multiple layers of lacquer create a deep, lustrous finish. Popular for high-gloss contemporary kitchens. Requires careful handling as scratches show easily.

Solid Wood

Traditional material with natural beauty. Expands and contracts with humidity but ages beautifully. Premium option with enduring appeal.

Wood Veneer

Real wood surface over MDF or chipboard core. Offers wood appearance at lower cost than solid wood. Quality veneers are remarkably beautiful.

Understanding Quality

Material alone doesn’t determine quality. Construction methods, hinge quality, drawer runners, and finishes all contribute to how well cabinets perform over time.
